Uncorking Our 2012 Soda Canyon Ranch Merlot

In winemaking, patience is a virtue. With only one harvest annually, a year in barrel and another 18 months in bottle, a single vintage can take three to four years to craft before it is ready for release. Sometimes it’s hard to be patient, especially after an exceptional growing season, and the brilliant collaboration between our Daniel Baron and famed winemaking consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet. Which is why we are so thrilled to finally release our 2012 Soda Canyon Ranch Merlot!

The 2012 vintage will go down as a classic vintage for Napa Valley from start to finish.

At Soda Canyon Ranch in Napa Valley, our Merlot vines experienced optimal spring rains, followed by summer conditions with warm days and cool nights. Not only was our harvest bountiful, it was of exceptional quality.

Also in 2012, we began an exclusive partnership with Jean-Claude Berrouet, winemaker at the legendary Chateau Petrus for 44 vintages. Twomey Director of Winemaking, Daniel Baron, studied under Berrouet 35-years ago in Pomerol and the two venerable winemakers have since built a friendship based on mutual respect and admiration. With Jean-Claude’s guidance, we bottled a blend unlike any previous vintage for Twomey. This wine beautifully combines the refinement of old world winemaking with the expressiveness and generosity of California fruit.

Daniel describes this new release as a “texturally based wine with a garnet color and a nose of blackberry, licorice, graphite, tar, dark chocolate and cloves. The velvety mouth-feel of this wine is remarkable. The palate begins with a hint of blackberry fruit and builds to a long finish of fruit compote, chocolate and fine-grained tannins.”
