2014Pinot NoirBien Nacido Vineyard
Our 2014 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir has a royal garnet color. It has a nose of black plum, rose petals and a note of earthiness. On the palate this wine has a fruit-sweet attack and notes of black cherry, wild mushrooms and malt. It has beautiful weight, fine-grained tannins and a long fruit-filled finish. This central coast Pinot Noir will pair with anything from your favorite Chinese food to Santa Maria style barbequed tri-tip.

The 800 acre Bien Nacido ranch is one of the most important vineyards of California. In 2014, we sourced fruit from six distinct blocks whose varied topography, elevations and soils produced a complex, yet harmonious wine. Budbreak came in February, the result of an unusually warm winter. The growing season continued warm and sunny, resulting in an early flowering and fruit set leading to an abundance of full clusters. As we approached summer, we had yet to experience the foggy wet mornings known locally as “June gloom.” On August 2nd, we began the earliest harvest ever. Over the course of 26 days we brought in all the fruit, with an unparalleled balance of color, flavor and acidity.
A vineyard originally planted in 1973 to own-rooted vines, Bien Nacido Vineyard blankets the south-facing slopes on the eastern Santa Maria River Valley, 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard blocks are interspersed with avocado orchards and strawberry fields. The backbone of this wine comes from Blocks 1, 7 and 9, all sustainably farmed hillside plantings. We also included grapes from Block N, one of the original 1972 plantings of own-rooted Martini clone, a vineyard practice rare anywhere in the world.
