The 2016 growing season began with much needed rain until March, when well-drained hillside soils dried out. Budbreak began in mid-March, a little later compared to the previous 3 years, and bloom promised average yields for each vineyard. Summer was mild with only a few intermittent heat waves. This allowed the grapes to ripen at an ideal pace with sugar and acids evolving in tandem. Harvest was longer and later than past years allowing us to pick at our leisure. The late summer and early fall brought the seasonal shift we typically experience in Anderson Valley. Cooler, fog-laden mornings developed into sunny and warm afternoons followed by the crisp marine breezes in the evenings.
